North American Midway Entertainment (NAME) provided a Zamperla “Swing Tower” for the 2010 NFL Pro Bowl festivities at Landshark Stadium in Miami, FL. NAME also offered the ride for Super Bowl XLIV on February 7, 2010. NAME will return to Miami in spring for the Annual Miami Dade County Fair & Expo, which runs from March 25 through April 11. In 2010, the company also added the East Texas State Fair.
Timothy Merriman of Big M Amusements, Inc. based in New Holland, Illinois reported a successful 2009 fair season, which included a the Morton Pumpkin Festival in Morton, IL. The mid-September fair had pleasant weather despite a rainy 2009. Timothy also reported that his most popular rides were the giant slide and Tilt-a-Whirl.
Belle City Amusements played its first event of the year in Manatee County, Florida. The fair was held from January 14-24. Charles Panacek of Belle City Amusements said that attendance was up compared to last year when weather was cold. The first Saturday of the fair was lost to rain. Mr. Panacek commented, “I noticed spending is still tight, but we’re pleased.”
Cole Shows Amusement Co., Inc. of Covington, Virginia began 2010 with the Kids Winter Carnival in Salem, VA. Although it was an indoor event, attendance was affected by a blast of winter weather.
David E. Grein of Funtime Carnival, Inc. of Cincinnati, Ohio is looking forward to better weather in 2010. Funtime Carnival purchased a spin ride manufactured by Sellner. While they offered this ride late in the 2009 fair season, 2010 will be its first full season.
As Christman Amusements of Wautoma, Wisconsin prepares for 2010, they hope for continuing low fuel prices, which helped offset the affects of the overall economy in 2009.
Lewellen Amusements, based in Andover, Kansas, is currently renovating several rides. 2009 was a successful fair season for Lewellen, says Dee Lewellen. Highlights included the Amelia Earhart Festival in Atchison, Kansas and the Sundown Salute in Junction City. Sundown Salute is the largest Fourth of July celebration in Kansas.
In preparation for the 2010 season, Calkins Midways, Inc. of Riverview, Florida is busy with renovations, including the repainting of their carousel and Wisdom Sizzler. After a rainy 2009, Charles Waterman of Calkins Midways is hoping for better weather in 2010.
Luehrs' Ideal Rides of Belleville, Illinois purchased a Beach Party fun house from Owen Trailers, Inc. for the 2010 fair season. Andy Schoendienst of Luehrs' expects a strong 2010 fair season after a record 2009.
Bill Swank of Swank's Steel Shows, Inc. says the company will return to the Monongalia County Fair in West Virginia. The fair had been suspended for two years while work was completed on the new Westover Fairgrounds, near Morgantown, WV.
Reithoffer Shows of Gibsonton, Florida has added five new fairs in 2010. Rick Reithoffer of Reithoffer Shows commented on the positive feedback the company has received about their Giant Wheel’s lighting system. A state-of-the-art computer controller directs the 45- minute show. The innovative German LED light system is the first of this design in the United States.
Show Me Fabrication, Inc. offered a new glasshouse/funhouse with customizable theme at the 2010 IISF Trade Show & Extravaganza. The company also reported a new concessions product is on the way. More info to follow.
