Richard "Harold" Chance Passes Away

The Carnival Magazine staff expresses its condolences to the Chance family and Chance Manufacturing.  Richard "Harold" Chance founded Chance Manufacturing Company.  Harold passed away on July 10, 2010.  He was 88 years old.   More information about Harold and his life can be found online in the Wichita Eagle: click here.

7.14.10 Midway Talk

Deggeller Attractions featured their 50-foot tall roller coaster, The Riptide at the Salem Fair in Salem, Virginia.  The five-trailer coaster made its first appearance at the Fair along more than 40 other rides.  Other rides new to Salem were Deggeller's Wacky Worm, Rio, and Spin the Apple.  This was the 23rd Salem Fair.  It ran from June 1 - June 11.  A full article by Neil Harvey about The Riptide and Deggeller Attractions at the Salem Fair appears online at www.roanoke.com.

The California State Fair kicks off today, July 14.  The Fair was moved from late August/early September in order to accommodate summer recess for area schools.  Fairgoers will find special deals on many food items at the fair with 25% off most prices.  A special food feature this year will be deep-fried Moon Pies.  The Butler Amusements midway will feature over 60 rides, including four Neverland Ranch rides previously owned by Michael Jackson.  The Fair runs until August 1 at Cal Expo in Sacramento, CA.

Arkansas-based Miller Spectacular Shows, Inc. added the Heart of Illinois Fair in Peoria, IL to their 2010 schedule.  The Fair began July 9 and runs through July 17.  Among the rides featured at the Fair was the Eclipse thrill ride.  The new ride is the only one in the United States at this time, with only three others in operation worldwide.  For more information on the Fair and Miller Spectacular Shows, visit pjstar.com and read Karen McDonald's article on the event.

Joe Blash's Shamrock Shows is featured in an Lompoc Record article by Julian J. Ramos.  The July 13 article is a preview of the 199th annual Santa Barbara County Fair.  The Fair runs from July 14 through July 18 at the Santa Maria Fairpark.  Shamrock Shows will feature their Mark-1 Roller Coaster among other rides.  Shamrock Shows is based in Southern California.

The Lincoln County Fair in North Platte, Nebraska will host a carnival for the first time in twenty years.  Sun Valley Rides of Arizona will provide the midway.  The event runs July 22 - July 31. 


6.16.10 Midway Talk

10 people rescued when a Sky Wheel stopped working in mid-operation Thursday evening at a Los Angeles festival.   KTLA News reports that the Los Angeles City Fire Department was called to the event at Hollywood High School at 7:42.  Firefighters assisted the riders off the Wheel via arial ladder.  There were no injuries and the scene was described as "calm and orderly."  The event was part of opening ceremonies for Toy Story 3.

The Florida State Fairgrounds are being evaluated for major re-development.  According to the St. Petersburg Times, "the fear of another poor fair season has driven the Florida State Fair officials to study the possibility of large-scaled development at the fairgrounds near Tampa."  Consultant Charlie Smith will conduct a 30-day site study.

The San Diego County Fair kicked off Friday, June 11.  The event will run until Monday, July 5.  Read July's issue of Carnival Magazine for more information on the Fair.

Wood Entertainment premiered their new Owens "Magic Maze" Mirror Maze at the San Diego County Fair.  The Fair opened on June 11 and runs through Monday, July 5.  A wrap-up on the Fair will appear in September's Carnival Magazine.

James E. Strates Shows opened its 30-day run in Danbury, CT on June 18.  Rides at the City Fair in Danbury include a Giant Wheel, KMG Fireball, Wave Swinger, Thunderbolt, and Musik Express.  Strates Shows will co-sponsor a fireworks display on July 2.  The event is located at the Danbury Fair Mall.

Also in CT, Marenna Amusements is playing the first festival at Redding Elementary School.  The event runs June 25 - 27.

Carnival Daze in McMinnville, Oregon runs Sunday June 24-27.  Carnival Daze is a new festival.  It will be played by Funtastic Shows.

The State Fair of Virginia has elected five new board members-- Frank Atkinson, Tyson Gilpin, Jennifer McClellan, Charlie Payne, and Lyle Pugh.  They will serve two consecutive three year terms from 2010 to 2015.

N.A.M.E. reports that Unit manager, Tom Thebault saw a great increase in attendance at the N.A.M.E. Texas events this spring.  His unit provided the midway this year at Border Fest, Zapata County, and Lions Club events.

Capitol City Amusements were awarded the title of "California Small Business of the Year" for Assembly District 10.  Capitol City is based in Sacramento, CA and owned by Kevin and Jane Tate.  Congratulations to the Captiol City!
